Zolpidem is a prescription sedative-hypnotic that can be purchased at your local pharmacy or online and is used to treat sleep problems (insomnia). This medicine is usually taken at bedtime by mouth preferably some time after you had a meal, as otherwise its absorption can be affected. Make sure to follow the directions on your prescription label and avoid taking more of this drug than recommended. Zolpidem is intended for short-term treatment of sleep problems, including insomnia, and the problem you experience are likely to cease after 7-10 days of the treatment. Tell your doctor before asking him for a prescription about any other medications you are taking at the moment, including sleeping pills, cold medications, pain medications, sertraline, sedatives, drugs for mental illness, medications for anxiety, seizure medications, antidepressants, allergies medications, rifampin, and tranquilizers. This may affect your dosage and the possibility of taking zolpidem in general. Do not combine this drug with any other ones without your doctor's consent.

Before the treatment can be started your doctor will need to know if you have ever had breathing problems, asthma, myasthenia gravis, emphysema, depression, bronchitis, sleep apnea, problem with heavy snoring, and liver or kidney disease. Additional tests may be required for you to take this medicine safely. Do not get pregnant or breastfeed when taking this medicine as it may cause problems in newborn and breastfeeding babies. To avoid getting pregnant talk to your doctor about using an efficient birth control method. In case of having even a minor surgery make sure you talk to your health care provider about the possibility of stopping the treatment with zolpidem to avoid drug interactions (you will be given certain drugs during the surgery that can cause interactions). In some cases zolpidem made people taking it get up in the middle of the night and do activities that they later had no recollections of. If the same thing happened to you, make sure you let your health care provider know about it. The mild side effects of zolpidem sometimes reported include dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, constipation, changes in appetite, uncontrollable shaking, ringing, pain, or itching in the ears, muscle cramps, diarrhea, difficulty keeping balance, and eye redness.
